General Information


Public Transport

As a registered regular participant you have free access to public transportation services (BVG) in Berlin. The name badge you receive with your conference bag serves as ticket and is valid from Sunday, August 1, to Saturday, August 7. You may use all regular busses, U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines in Berlin and Potsdam, zones A,B,C.


Taxi

To order a taxi, dial 26 10 26, 21 01 01, or, for the taxi stop at ``Dahlem Dorf'', 832 41 83.


Post Office

The nearest post office is in Königin-Luise-Straße 31, between the Arnimallee and U-Bahn ``Dahlem Dorf''. Mailboxes are yellow and can be found throughout the city.


Telephone

Public phones can be found in the basement of the Physiologie building, near Room 6, and in the entrance hall of the Informatik building. Phone cards can be purchased at any post office for DM 12 or DM 50.


Banks

There are two banks close to the U-Bahn station ``Dahlem Dorf'': Berliner Bank, Königin-Luise-Straße 43 and Dresdner Bank, Königin-Luise-Straße 44. Opening hours are Mon, Wed, Fri, 9:00 AM to 2:00 PM and Tue, Thu 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM. You will find several other banks near ``Rathaus Steglitz'' and the SI Hotel.

Please note that all banks are closed Saturday and Sunday.


Shopping

Most shops are open from around 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM from Monday to Friday and 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Saturday. Most shops are closed on Sunday (except at airports or train stations). Major shopping areas are located between S/U-Bahn ``Rathaus Steglitz'' and U-Bahn ``Walther-Schreiber Platz'' on Schloßstraße, on Kurfürstendamm/Kurfürstenstraße, between U-Bahn ``Kurfürstenstraße'' and U-Bahn ``Wittenbergplatz'', and on Friedrichstraße, U-Bahn ``Stadtmitte''. There is a small food store ``Meyer Beck'' in Dahlem Dorf, Königin-Luise-Straße 37, open from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM.


Medical Care

The nearest pharmacy is located in Dahlem Dorf, Königin-Luise-Straße 38. At every pharmacy you will find information about night and weekend services of the area posted.

If you think you need medical assistance, please contact the conference office. We will assist you arranging an appointment with a local doctor.

Note that the conference fee does not include health insurance and you will have to pay the doctor in cash!

Opera, Theater, Music

Although many theaters are closed in August, you will find a rich variety of events every day. To get an overview, you may consult the magazines ``TIP'' or ``Zitty''. You may also ask for information and purchase tickets (with a moderate additional commission fee) at several agencies throughout Berlin, e.g. ``Theaterkasse Centrum'', Meinekestr. 25 near Kurfürstendamm, or ``Theaterkasse am Alex'' in the S-Bahn station Alexanderplatz. Last-minute tickets can be purchased at special prices at ``Hekticket'', Hardenbergstraße 29A near Zoologischer Garten (U2, U9 and S-Bahn).
